Windows 8.1 Features List

Many of us know that Windows 8.1 (codenamed Windows Blue) is an update for Windows 8 and Windows RT. Windows 8.1 tries to fix issues and annoyances which many Windows 8 users are facing such as missing Start button, annoying hot corners, inability to customize Metro stuff, etc.
Windows 8 is considered as a 2-in-1 OS which was made for Desktops as well as touch-enabled devices such as Tablets. Windows 8 seems one of the best OS for Tablets but it failed to attract and satisfy Desktop and Laptop users. The new touch-oriented features such as Start Screen, hot corners, Metro apps, etc don't seem to work perfectly on computers.
Also the removal of Start button and a few other classic components disappointed many Windows users and new users found it difficult to operate Windows 8 computers.
But since when Microsoft started posting about Windows 8.1 features, it seems that Windows 8.1 will help Microsoft in making Windows 8 a perfect OS for both Desktops as well as Tablets.
A few months back we posted an article about things which users want to see in next Windows version:
[Wishlist] Features You Want to See in Next Windows Version
Now it seems that Microsoft is listening to users feedback and they are fixing Windows 8 issues in Windows 8.1 to make all Windows users happy.
In this article, we are going to list all new and exclusive features which Microsoft has put in Windows 8.1. It'll help you in understanding the difference between Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 and you'll be able to know about all new stuff present in Windows 8.1.
So without wasting time lets share the complete features list of Windows 8.1:

Finally the wait is over. Many AskVG readers who have started using Microsoft's latest OS Windows 8 were requesting us since long time to post our exclusive master tutorial to make Windows 8 super fast just like we posted similar tutorials for previous Windows versions in past. You can find them at following links:
This exclusive master tutorial series is one of our best and most popular articles and today in this article we are going to add another tutorial to this series.
Today we are going to share a detailed guide which will help you in making Windows 8 faster and improve your system performance. It'll help you in disabling unnecessary eye candy effects such as shadows, animations, etc. Also you'll be able to disable unwanted programs and services which start automatically with Windows.
So if you want to tweak Windows 8 and want to make it super fast, check out following simple steps:
STEP 1: Apply Registry Tweaks
We are providing a ready-made Registry script in this step which will tweak some settings in Windows 8 Registry to make Windows faster. It'll reduce timeout values, set Windows to automatically end not responding tasks, make menus to show faster upon clicking and tweak various other settings.
Simply download the zip file given in following topic, extract it and you'll get "Registry Tweaks to Make Windows Faster.reg" file. Run the file and it'll ask for confirmation, accept it:
Download Windows 8 Registry Tweaks Collection
The zip file also contains an uninstallation registry script to restore all default settings.
STEP 2: Customize System Properties to Disable Shadows and Animations
By default Windows shows many eye candy effects such as animations, shadow effects, etc to enhance user interface. You can turn off these kind of effects to speed up system performance.
1. Press "Win+R" keys together to open RUN dialog box. Now type sysdm.cpl and press Enter. It'll open System Properties window.

You can disable a few features of Windows Explorer such as tooltips, etc to improve Explorer functionality:

2. Go to "View" tab and uncheck following options:

  • Hide extensions for known file types

Customize_Windows_8_Folder_Options.png
3. Apply changes and close the window.
STEP 4: Disallow Unnecessary Windows Services to Start Automatically
There are many built-in services in Windows which automatically start with Windows and always run in background even if the system doesn't need them. You can disallow many unnecessary services to start automatically with Windows to improve system performance.
Check out following tutorial to learn which services you should disable in Windows 8:
Windows 8 Services Configuration Guide
STEP 5: Disable Unnecessary Programs from Windows Startup
Many 3rd party software add their entries in Windows startup list so that they can automatically run as soon as Windows starts. Many of those startup items are unnecessary and can be removed from startup list to speedup Windows.
Follow these simple steps to disable unwanted startup items in Windows 8:
1. In previous Windows versions the startup items list was present in system configuration manager which can be accessed using msconfig command. But Microsoft has moved the startup items list in Windows 8. Now it can be accessed using Task Manager.
Right-click on Taskbar and select "Task Manager" option. Alternatively, you can directly open Task Manager by pressing "Ctrl+Shift+Esc" keys together.
2. Now go to "Startup" tab and here you can click on the unwanted item and click on "Disable" button to remove it from startup.
Customize_Windows_8_Startup_Items.png
Now the disabled program will no longer run whenever you start Windows. It'll only run if you launch it manually.
STEP 6: Remove Sound Notifications of System Events
By default Windows plays sounds for various system events such as error messages, device connect, device disconnect, command success, battery status, UAC prompt, etc.
Sometimes many of these sound notifications might cause a little bit slowness in your system. If you have a slow computer system, you can disable some or all sound notifications in Windows 8 to speedup your computer system:
1. Open Control Panel and click on Sound icon. Alternatively, you can directly open it using mmsys.cpl command.
2. Once you open Sound window, go to "Sounds" tab. Here you can click on desired program event which you want to disable and then select "(None)" from "Sounds" drop-down list.
Customize_Windows_8_Sound_Scheme.png
If you want to disable all sound notifications, select "No Sounds" from "Sound Scheme" drop-down box.
3. Apply the changes and close the window.
STEP 7: A Few More Things to Do to Make Windows 8 Faster
After following all above mentioned steps, you should be able to notice big improvement in your system performance. Apart from these steps, you should also do following things regularly:
  • Download and install latest updates using Windows Updates
  • Use latest drivers for your computer hardware
  • Install only necessary software
  • Stay away from transformation packs! Install skins packs recommended by us only
  • Use a good antivirus and keep it updated

Hidden Secret Way to Organize Favorites in Internet Explorer

Today we are going to share another "Did You Know (DYK)" trick. In our exclusive DYK series we share interesting tips which exist since long time in popular software but many people are not aware of these tricks. We have shared these tips in comment section or other AskVG articles but now we have started sharing them in separate topics so that more people can learn about them.
In past we have told you about secret Network Monitor menu in older Nokia mobile phones, hidden DeskBar Options tab present in Windows 98 Taskbar properties, etc. Today in this topic we are going to tell you a secret way to organize favorites in Internet Explorer web browser.
We all know about "Favorites" or Bookmarks items in web browsers. Almost all web browsers allow you to save any webpage as a favorite or bookmark item so that you don't need to remember its URL and you can visit the webpage quickly and easily anytime in future.
In Internet Explorer, you can organize favorites by clicking on "Favorites -> Organize Favorites" option present in Menubar.
IE_Organize_Favorites_Option.png
When you click on organize favorites option, it opens a small window which allows you to rename, delete or move existing favorite items. You can also create new folders to organize favorites.
IE_Favorites_Organizer.png
But did you know these favorites are actually stored as .URL (Internet Shortcut) files in "Favorites" folder present in your Windows user profile folder and you can directly open this "Favorites" folder using a hidden secret way?
You just need to press and hold "SHIFT" key while clicking on "Favorites -> Organize Favorites" option.
Hidden_Secret_IE_Favorites_Trick.png
Now it'll open "Favorites" folder in Windows Explorer instead of opening Internet Explorer's built-in favorite organizer interface.
Internet_Explorer_Favorites_Window.png
Now you can rename, delete or move all your favorite links in bulk just like you organize other files in Windows Explorer.
This trick exists since Internet Explorer 5 version or may be older versions and can be used in all newer versions of Internet Explorer such as IE9, IE10 or IE11.
Its a nice small and secret feature of Internet Explorer. Although you can access "Favorites" folder using other ways as well such as by typing favorites in RUN dialog box or by directly opening the folder from C:\Users\your_user_name\ in Windows Explorer but the above mentioned secret way might become very useful when you want to organize your favorites directly from IE.

How to Enable Titlebar Text and Icon in Mozilla Firefox 28 and Later?

We told you earlier that Mozilla has launched the "Australis UI" in Firefox 28.0 version which is currently under development and testing and can be downloaded using Nightly branch:
Mozilla Firefox Nightly Build News and Updates
There are many big UI changes in this new Australis UI and one of these changes is the removal of orange Firefox button from titlebar. Now the button has been removed and has been replaced by a new Menu button present at the extreme right corner of toolbar.
Customize_Control_Mozilla_Firefox_Menu.png
The removal of Firefox button caused one big issue for some users. In other words it removed a basic feature of the browser which was showing titlebar text and icon. Actually when the orange Firefox button was present, one can disable the orange button and enable good old Menu bar by right-clicking on the toolbar and select "Menu Bar" option as mentioned in following tutorial:
How to Remove Orange Button from Titlebar and Get Old Menu Bar Back in Mozilla Firefox?
Once the Menu bar is enabled, the titlebar text and icon was automatically shown in the browser.
Now Mozilla has removed the orange button from titlebar and the Menu bar has also been moved to titlebar, so even if you enable Menu bar, the titlebar text and icon is not shown.
Now the question occurs how to enable titlebar text and icon in newer Firefox versions? Here is the answer.
Mozilla has added a new option to toggle Titlebar on or off in the latest Nightly build. Now you can enable or disable titlebar text and icon in Firefox with the click of a single button.
If you are using a Nightly, UX or Aurora build of Firefox which comes with the new Australis UI, you can enable Titlebar text and icon with the help of following simple steps:
1. Open Firefox and right-click on the empty area of Tab bar and click on "Customize..." option. Alternatively you can also access the same option using the new Menu button present at the right end of Firefox toolbar.
2. It'll open the new "Customize Firefox" interface where you can add, remove or move buttons and toolbars in Firefox window. You'll notice a new button "Title Bar" present at the bottom of the window.
Enable_Mozilla_Firefox_Titlebar.png
Just click on it and it'll immediately enable titlebar text and icon in Firefox window. If you want to disable the titlebar, click on the button again.
Mozilla_Firefox_Titlebar_Text_Icon.png
PS: Actually its not a new feature of Firefox. Mozilla has cleverly put a direct shortcut to toggle an old about:config preference "browser.tabs.drawInTitlebar" on or off in the form of this new "Title Bar" button in customize Firefox window. We have discussed this preference long time back in following tutorial:
How to Show Tabs Below Orange Button When Mozilla Firefox is Maximized?
If you check "about:config" page before and after clicking on the new "Title Bar" button, its just toggling value of "browser.tabs.drawInTitlebar" preference.
This tutorial will come handy for all Firefox users when Firefox 28.0 version is released to Stable channel.

Customize Start Page Background Theme and Number of Columns in Opera

This tutorial will help you in customizing following stuff in Opera web browser:
  • Customizing Start Page
  • Changing and creating background theme of Start Page
  • Changing number of columns of tiles at Speed Dial page
  • Enabling Bookmarks bar (previously known as Quick Access Bar)
  • Accessing advanced settings (Hardcore Mode) in Opera
Yesterday Opera team updated its web browser to version 19 which comes with some cool new stuff such as themes support, new favorites bar and new options available for advanced users in Settings page.
In this tutorial we'll tell you how to use these new features in Opera web browser. So without wasting time lets start the tutorial:
1. Enabling Bookmarks Bar in Opera
Opera team has added the much awaited Bookmarks bar or Favorites bar to Opera web browser. Actually it already existed in previous versions of Opera with the name "Quick Access Bar" which could be enabled using advanced configuration page "Opera://flags".
Now Opera team has renamed it to Bookmarks bar and made available for all users. By default its not activated but you can enable it using Opera Settings page as mentioned below:
1. Open Opera and click on Opera button and then click on Settings option. Alternatively you can directly launch Settings page by pressing Alt+P keys together.
2. Now scroll down a little and enable "Show the bookmarks bar" option given in "User interface" section.
Enable_Bookmarks_Bar_Opera.png
It'll immediately add the bookmarks bar below the addressbar.
2. Changing Background Theme of Start Page in Opera
Now you can customize the background image of Start Page in Opera. You can either choose from the built-in background images or apply one of your desired images available on your PC as Start Page background.
Simply follow these simple steps to change or create Start Page background theme:
1. Open Start Page in Opera by creating a new tab and right-click on an empty area. You'll get "Change theme" option in the context menu, click on it.
Change_Opera_Theme.png
Alternatively, you can directly open Themes page by clicking on Opera button and then clicking on "Themes" option.
2. On Themes page, you can click on any available image and it'll immediately apply it as Start Page background.
PS: If you are visiting a webpage which contains an image, you can right-click on the image and select "Use image as theme" option to directly set the image as Start Page background.
3. If you want to apply any other desired image as background, click on "Create your theme" link given in the sidebar.
Create_Opera_Background_Theme.png
Now you can select your desired image by clicking on "Choose file" button. After selecting the image, give your theme any desired name and adjust the alignment of the image file. You can align the image to top, bottom or center of screen. You can also choose the text color for Speed Dial tiles. If you want, you can turn on or off text shadow effect as well.
At last click on "Create" button and it'll immediately apply your newly created theme as Start Page background.
4. You can manage your themes using "My themes" link in Themes page. It allows you to switch between custom themes as well as deleting unwanted themes.
3. Changing number of columns of tiles at Speed Dial page Using Advanced Settings
Now Opera also allows you to change maximum number of columns of tiles shown at Start Page or Speed Dial page. By default the maximum column number limit is set to 5 but you can increase or decrease it according to your requirements. The option to change the number of tiles can be accessed using advanced settings in Opera as mentioned below:
Open Opera Settings page and scroll down to bottom and you'll see a new checkbox "Show advanced settings".
Enable_Opera_Advanced_Settings.png
Enable this checkbox and you'll see some new options added to Settings page which are as following:
  • Disable tab bar's top spacing when browser window is maximized
  • Maximum number of columns
  • Use hardware acceleration when available
"Disable tab bar's top spacing when browser window is maximized" option is present in "User interface" section. It allows you to remove extra spacing from the top of tab bar. Its a very small UI change which is hardly noticeable.
Disable_Tab_Bar_Top_Spacing_Opera.png
"Maximum number of columns" option is present in "Start page" section which allows you to change maximum number of columns allowed on Start Page or Speed Dial page. You can choose any number between 2 and 7.
Change_Column_Number_Opera_Speed_Dial_Page.png
"Use hardware acceleration when available" option is present in "System" section. You can disable this option if you are facing any font issue in Opera. Some users might get blurred fonts in webpages while using Opera. Most of the times such kind of issues occur due to hardware acceleration (GPU Rendering) feature of the web browser. We have covered guides to disable hardware acceleration feature in Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office in past. If you are facing similar issues in Opera, you can turn this option off to fix these issues.

How to Change Download Folder Location in Your Favorite Web Browser?

There are many web browsers available on Internet but four browsers Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera are the most popular and widely used among all. Different people like different browsers and personally I prefer using Firefox on my computers. Generally I install all popular web browsers in my personal and work computers as I need to test their features and extensions to write articles about them here at AskVG.
Because of using many web browsers in a single computer system, I organize the downloaded files of each web browser in different folders for my convenience. For example I have a folder "Downloads" in my hard disk drive which contains 4 sub-folders such as IE Downloads, Firefox Downloads, etc to store downloaded files of each browser. In this way I can easily find out which files were downloaded by which web browser and my downloaded files never get mixed up.
By default almost all web browsers are set to store your downloaded files in "Downloads" folder present in your Windows user profile folder but that location can be easily changed using web browser settings.
If you use a web browser and want to change the download folder location, this tutorial will help you.
Today in this tutorial we are going to tell how to change downloads folder location in Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera web browsers.
Change Download Location in Internet Explorer
1. Opera Internet Explorer and click on Tools -> View downloads option. Alternatively you can open download manager window directly by pressing "Ctrl+J" keys together.
2. Now click on "Options" link given at the bottom-left area of download manager window.
3. Now click on "Browse" button, select your desired folder and click on "Select Folder" button.
